Real Estate Lawyer of the Year Finalists: Al Stemp, Kirkland & Ellis

Al Stemp was recognized as a finalist for the California Legal Awards in the "Real Estate Lawyer of the Year" category and participated in a Q&A.

What's your proudest professional achievement of the past year and why?

With respect to for-profit, client-focused achievements, the HPP representation and successfully closing the Westside One deal was the highlight of the year. It was such a phenomenal result for the client, UCLA, and Google, and a win for the Los Angeles real estate community. None of this happens unless all the parties are completely satisfied with the outcome. It proves there is still value in creative office space at a time when nobody is seeing trades like this.

On the pro bono side, I serve on the board of, Bet Tzedek, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit law firm that represents Angelinos in matters ranging from elder abuse and fraud cases for low-income seniors to supporting the rights of tenants, homeowners and the unhoused. Being a part of the organization is extremely rewarding. This year is Bet Tzedek's 50th anniversary, and Kirkland & Ellis was recognized for the substantial level of pro bono services and support the firm and its attorneys provided to Angelinos most in need of legal services through its work with Bet Tzedek.

What advice would you give to new attorneys specializing in real estate law?

For new attorneys, my advice is to dive into the subject matter. Be curious and inquisitive. Be invested in your clients. Understand a client's motivations and concerns. Learn to embrace the industry and what's going on. If you develop a passion for the underlying subject matter, it makes the job easier and more enjoyable.
