Kirkland Receives Award for Excellence in Pro Bono Service 2019
In May 2019, Kirkland & Ellis was presented with the 2019 Award for Excellence in Pro Bono Service by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in conjunction with the Chicago Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. The Firm received the award for representing a client who allegedly suffered medical mistreatment while he was incarcerated at Stateville Correctional Center. Despite making several requests for medical treatment and abiding by all required procedures, the client was largely ignored, and the quality of treatment he did receive was below an acceptable standard of care. With Kirkland’s assistance, he sued Stateville’s then-medical director and certain other parties to receive adequate medical care and compensation for his injuries.
Restructuring partner Justin Bernbrock, litigation partner Reed Oslan and associate Casey McGushin and senior paralegal Sabrina West each made significant contributions to the case. The team accepted the award at the annual Excellence in Pro Bono and Public Interest Service Award Ceremony in Chicago.
